Winter Stories is a story about cosy togetherness for the cold winter days. About the time of year when darkness falls earlier, we light more candles and seek shelter indoors – closer to one another.
Small animals, trees and nature motifs meet in poetic porcelain landscapes. Each design tells its own little story, but together they create a universe of warmth, presence and the special moments that belong to winter.
Winter Stories is close to our hearts. It was the collection that truly created Dottir's breakthrough, and it still holds something absolutely central to our design universe: the love of detail, the handmade porcelain, and the small stories that can create atmosphere in a home.
The inspiration comes from the Nordic winter and the nature around us. Hares, foxes, squirrels, hedgehogs, deer and trees become small scenes where the imagination is free to continue the story. Some animals stand alone, others come together in small landscapes, and often a lit candle becomes part of the motif.
When the candle is lit, the design changes character. The flame creates shadows between the trees, highlights the figures and brings the porcelain to life. It is precisely this interplay between porcelain, light and story that gives Winter Stories its special expression.
The collection is made for winter's small rituals. For the first evening when the candles are lit a little earlier. For advent and Christmas. For dinners with people you love. For a quiet afternoon with a cup of coffee or a dark winter morning, where a single lit candle can make a difference.
Winter Stories is Christmas and winter decoration, but first and foremost it is design created to build atmosphere and presence.
The individual Winter Stories pieces can stand alone or be gathered into small personal winter landscapes. A candlestick on the table, a figure on the windowsill, or several designs placed together on a shelf can each create their own story. Some come out as a fixed part of the Christmas traditions year after year, while others are allowed to stay out for the whole winter.
In this way, the collection can grow over time. New figures can move in and join the ones you already have. And gradually they become not just part of the winter decoration, but part of the family's own traditions and memories.
Behind the small stories lies demanding porcelain craftsmanship. Winter Stories is made with great attention to the details that give the animals, trees and landscapes their character. The porcelain is cast, and each piece is worked and polished by hand. Many designs consist of several small porcelain parts that are assembled manually before being glazed and fired at very high temperatures.
It takes precision and experience to create the small figures and fine details in porcelain. At the same time, it is the human hands in the process that mean two products are never completely alike.
Small variations in shape, surface and glaze are therefore not flaws, but a natural part of the craftsmanship. They give each Winter Stories-design its own character and are a visible trace of the people who helped create it.
Winter Stories is made by hand – and designed to become part of the moments we remember.
Because winter is not only about cold and darkness. It is also about what the darkness makes us do: light candles, create warmth, gather around the table and seek togetherness.
That is where Winter Stories belongs.
Small stories in porcelain that move into the home, come out again year after year, and slowly become part of our own stories.
Winter Stories celebrates the cosy togetherness of the cold winter days – and the small moments of light, warmth and presence that bring us closer together.
