A new Dottir product can take several years to develop. Shapes, proportions, reliefs, colours and glazes are developed, tested and adjusted again and again, and our producers are carefully selected according to the techniques and craftsmanship each design requires. Dottir’s distinctive expression emerges when familiar shapes and patterns are taken out of their original context and brought together in new and surprising ways – in porcelain or fine stoneware, with new colours, glazes and expressions. Human hands are an essential part of the process from start to finish.
WE ARE FURTHER DEVELOPING AN ANCIENT ART FORM
Porcelain is rooted in a ceramic tradition that has been developed and refined in China over thousands of years. For some of our most complex designs, we collaborate with specialised producers in China. Deep reliefs, delicate patterns, organic shapes, intricate constructions and transparent glazes require great precision, experience and craftsmanship.
Together, we continuously develop and refine moulds, glazes and production methods.
It is the meeting of an ancient craft tradition and a contemporary Nordic design language.

AT DOTTIR, WE TAKE GREAT CARE
We take great care with the details. Even those you may not notice at first glance. An edge. The depth of a relief. The way the glaze settles. The perfect shade.
We constantly work with new colours and vibrant, transparent glazes that highlight the shapes and details of the porcelain. Quality is not something we add at the end. It is present in every choice we make along the way.
GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME
Porcelain is a demanding material. It moves during drying and firing, and the glaze reacts differently depending on temperature, thickness and its position in the kiln.
The more complex the design, the more difficult it is to achieve exactly the result we want. When human hands are part of the process, no two products are ever completely identical. Small variations in shape, surface and glaze are therefore not flaws, but a natural part of the handmade expression. They help give each Dottir design its own character.
QUALITY SHOULD BE FELT
For us, quality is not only about what you can see. It should be felt when you hold a Dottir design in your hand. In the weight of the material. In the depth of the glaze. In the details of a relief. And in the way light moves across the porcelain. But perhaps above all, in the feeling that someone has taken great care.
